Mrs. Clay-Butts was born in St. Paul, MN and raised in Chicago, IL. She has been a resident of Atlanta, Ga. for 28 years. She has a teen-aged son.

Gladys Clay-ButtsMrs. Clay-Butts is a graduate of Wiley College in Marshall, Texas where she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and the title “Miss Wiley College.” She also received a Masters degree in Social Work (MSW) from Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia. Mrs. Clay-Butts received from North Texas State University a certificate as a Retirement Housing Professional (RHP).

After Graduate school Mrs. Clay-Butts was employed by Wesley Woods, Inc. as the Director of Asbury Harris Epworth Towers a retirement community located in southwest Atlanta. Mrs. Clay-Butts has over twenty-six years of experience in the field of Gerontology and Management. She is a member of the Georgia Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (GAHSA) Board of Directors and holds the positions of treasurer and Chairperson of the Membership Committee. A member of the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA), a certified Assisted Housing Manager and a Retirement Housing Professional and a certified Targeted Selection Interviewer.

Mrs. Clay-Butts community involvement includes being a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and a member of the Metro Atlanta Kiwanis Club. In 2005, Mrs. Clay-Butts was a recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Award for Outstanding Service in Leadership for Change in Church and Community from Ben Hill United Methodist Church.

She volunteered and played tennis with the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association (ALTA) for over 15 years. During that time she was the Vice President of the Business Women’s League, Vice President of Media and Special Programs and an elected member of their Board of Directors. She is a certified member of the Atlanta Professional Tennis Umpire Association (APTUA) where she staffed umpires for Junior and College tournaments.

She has been a member of Ben Hill UMC for over 20 years. A member of the BHUMC Sanctuary Choir and the Chairperson the BHUMC Staff/Parish Relations Committee 2003-2005.
